New Year Obligations Part 1: Acting in Accordance to the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
Lately, I have been exploring new topics for my writing and want to start a series that addresses critical issues our nation is facing. A key focus of this series is advocating for the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Recently, I have been reflecting on how we are surrounded by the idolization of celebrities in Hollywood and sports, which reflects the sinful nature of our world. As stated in 1 John 2:16: "For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the boastful pride of life is not from the Father, but is from the world." This warning from the Apostle John applies to everyone, not just fathers and young men. He further reminds us in 1 John 5:21: "Little children, guard yourselves from false idols." This serves as a call to remain vigilant against hypocrisy.
For instance, NBA star Stephen Curry professes his faith yet supports a political candidate whose agenda contradicts biblical teachings. Similarly, LeBron James has recently promoted a party atmosphere that is linked to troubling allegations against P. Diddy. These examples illustrate the disconnect between words and actions in our culture.
As disciples of Christ Jesus, we are called to express and publicly acknowledge these hypocritical beliefs that are misleading those who may be gullible. The youth, in particular, often see these public figures as "idols" and can become consumed by their beliefs and emotions.
I am very passionate about this topic, mainly because I am a fan of sports and entertainment. It saddens me to see prominent individuals elevated to the status of idols. Scripture teaches us that we must put Christ first above all else.
