A Disheartening Mockery During the Holiday Season

Pensacola, Florida—a city nestled in what many call the Bible Belt—has long been known for its strong Christian heritage. For those unfamiliar with the term, the Bible Belt refers to a region in the Southern United States, including parts of Missouri, where evangelical Protestantism shapes much of the cultural and moral framework. But recently, something deeply disheartening occurred in the heart of Pensacola. During the Christmas season—the most sacred time of year for Christians around the world—the historic Saenger Theatre opened its doors to a Drag Race-style show that openly mocks the Christian faith. To many believers in this city and beyond, it feels like a deliberate slap in the face to everything the Bible teaches.

Why This Is So Frustrating:

It’s not just the content of the show that’s concerning. It’s when it’s happening. Christmas is not just a holiday. It’s a holy day. It’s the celebration of the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ—God made flesh to redeem mankind from sin and death. The decision to host a show mocking biblical values during this season feels intentional and disrespectful to those who hold Christ dear.

What Does the Bible Say?

While the Bible doesn’t use the term “Drag Race,” it does speak clearly about gender, identity, and how God created humanity. Here are a few foundational Scriptures:

  • Genesis 1:27: “So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”

  • Deuteronomy 22:5: “A woman shall not wear a man’s clothing, nor shall a man put on a woman’s clothing; for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord your God.”

  • Matthew 19:4: “And He answered and said, ‘Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female.’”

These verses affirm a biblical framework for human identity—one that is rooted in God’s intentional and beautiful design. Drag performances, especially when used to satirize Christian faith, clearly stand in opposition to that design.

What Should Christians Do?

In moments like this, it’s easy to be driven by anger or outrage. But let’s be guided instead by truth and love:

  1. Speak up: Christians should not be silent. We must lovingly but firmly share that these shows are counterproductive to truth and holiness.

  2. Do not return hate with hate: Waving angry signs or using slurs is never the answer. The mission of the Church is to speak truth with grace (Ephesians 4:15).

  3. Pray and engage: Pray for those involved in these performances. Engage with your local community leaders, write to the theater, and let your concerns be known.

  4. Live boldly: Let your life reflect the holiness and love of Christ, even when the world mocks it.

Final Thoughts:

This isn’t just about a drag show. It’s about a spiritual culture war taking place right in our own backyard. Christians are called not to blend into the world, but to stand apart from it—marked by love, holiness, and truth.

Let’s remember:

We don’t fight people, we fight against the spiritual forces of darkness (Ephesians 6:12). Let us be bold, clear, and kind as we proclaim the unchanging truth of God’s Word in a world desperate for it.
